Give fools their gold, and knaves
their power;
Let fortune's bubbles rise and fall;
Who sows a field, or trains a flower,
Or plants a tree, is more than all.
-John Greenleaf Whittier
Our Mission:
to promote the importance of trees and community action in improving
the quality of life and enhancing the unique character of the
Sarasota region. We endeavor to work with the community to create
a legacy of trees for future generations.
To achieve this Mission,
the three main areas of focus for ReLEAF Sarasota are:
Conservation: Preserving and protecting Sarasota’s
existing urban forest
Education: Working diligently to educate our
City and County governments on the intrinsic and monetary value
of trees in the urban environment, and to influence policies
and ordinances to insure their protection.
Regeneration: Public events offering opportunities
to replace and replant trees for the future
With
your support, our efforts are paying off. Here are some of the
successes of ReLEAF Sarasota:
Urban Tree Canopy/Ecological Analysis: This
study quantified tree canopy changes over 20 years and determined
the annual monetary value of trees in our urban environment.
The Master Plan for Sarasota County’s Urban Forest
was drafted in 2005.
Additional protections for trees added to Sarasota County Tree
Ordinance, including Grand Tree protection and prohibition of
tree topping.
Changes to the Sarasota Tree Advisory Council (STAC):
STAC now advises the County Commission on tree regulations,
land development regulations, the Comprehensive Growth Management
Plan, and all tree issues.
Thousands of trees have been planted by ReLEAF throughout Sarasota
County at various locations, and countless more have been saved
through our intervention with community tree crises.
